"One of the main applications of this model has to do with the difficulty of being able to enter new markets (Nickols, 2000; Ghemawat, 1986). Another issue deals with the current competitors that are already in a market and the ability of a company to stay competitive in markets that they are already in (Nickols, 2000). The most significant issue that can be seen from the Five Forces model, says Nickols (2000), is that there is an inverse relationship between the intensity of the competition and the profit margins of the company - when the competition intensity rises, the returns and margins fall. The following diagram, also taken from Nickols (2000), shows the Five Forces that Porter discusses and is adapted from page 4 of Porter's book. It provides some detail that helps to elaborate on the ideas that Porter has."
