"Alice Petry has an interesting observation in her criticism of the story, in which she focuses on Ellie, Arnold Friend's sidekick. In her article, "Who is Ellie? Oates' Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been," Petry claims that Ellie Oscar is the "incarnation of the darker side of the admitted idol of Friend's prototype: Elvis Presley." Petry begins her defense by noting how Connie notices the physical characteristics of Ellie, which are amazingly similar to Presley. For example, we know that Ellie's bight orange shirt collar is turned up and is unbuttoned halfway down his chest. Ellie is wearing sunglasses and is also carrying a portable radio with him."
