Paper Summary:
This paper explains that capital punishment, or the death penalty, has been in the U.S. law even before the American Revolution. However, since then, the death penalty has undergone numerous changes in the American history, which are listed in the paper. The author points out that the death penalty used to be decided by local state's government; however, the jurisdiction to decide on whether a type of case deserves a death penalty is currently in the position of the Supreme Court, such as the ruling prohibiting the death sentence for minors. The paper presents several arguments for the death penalty, such as it may decrease capital crimes; however, the paper concludes that, if there is even a small percentage that an error in the provision of death sentence to a person may exist, the death sentence should be abolished.
