This paper discusses the Hobbesian theory that all human action is selfishly motivated and Mancur Olson's theory that joining a social movement is an illogical substitute. It attempts to define what constitutes a social movement and also looks at the forces that prompt individuals to join their peers for a common cause and analyzes two particular American movements that have proven to be successful - the Feminist and Civil Rights movements.

"A social movement, in lay terms, transpires when an assemblage of organized individuals takes action towards the opposing or joining of an explicit cause. Although the particulars associated with the aforesaid cause is of minimal consequence, an authentic social movement must be formed via cooperative action and planned strategy. Social movements must include a formalized configuration, willing participants, designated leadership, and a fundamental ideological premise. All of the above, however, must be formed outside of a recognized faction."
