This paper examines the economic and social climate in 1920s America that lead to Prohibition being instituted. The writer argues that an examination of the events of Prohibition demonstrates that it did not achieve its goals. It explains that Prohibition instead added to the societal problems it intended to solve, including crime, taxes and the decay of the country's morals. Only the Repeal of Prohibition in 1933 dramatically reduced crime and created jobs, although the problems plaguing the country have never returned to pre-prohibition levels.

"There were frightening side effects to the illegal alcohol served in speakeasies. It was either produced illegally or smuggled into the country. Beer and wine were difficult to smuggle because they contained a small amount of alcohol and more was needed to achieve drunkenness. Thus, many smugglers switched to hard liquor, which contained more alcohol and was more concentrated, making it easier to hide. However, as people started drinking more liquor, they became more drunk, despite drinking less of it (Bowen 154). Since smugglers were already committing a crime, other smugglers could hijack alcohol shipments easily and the highjackings sometimes ended in murder (Barry 24). Illegally produced alcohol caused frequent overdoses, which were often fatal. Many bootleggers accidentally produced poisonous liquor. Prohibition ultimately led many drinkers to more dangerous drugs and patent medicines that they would have been unlikely to encounter in the absence of Prohibition. Therefore, Prohibition contributed to poor health instead of improving health and hygiene, as intended."
