Although he was ill and could not attend the First Virginia Convention where the Virginia delegates were going to be elected, he sent a paper giving his views of the crisis. In the paper, he argued that Parliament had no control over the American colonies and that when the original settlers came to America, they had used their natural rights to emigrate. He claimed that the colonies still owed allegiance to only the king, and he aligned the colonists with the Saxons who settled in England from Germany hundreds of years earlier."
