Paper Summary:
This paper examines the theme of women's entrapment in contemporary society in Charlotte Perkins Gilman's short story "The Yellow Wallpaper". The paper discusses Gilman's use of symbolism, language and imagery to evoke this general portrayal, as well as specific quotations and words that speak to the narrator's entrapment within her own world, her marriage and finally within herself.
From the Paper:
"One of the ways that Gilman portrays the women of her society as trapped is through the use of the main character. In the story, both her husband and her brother, in spite of both men's good intentions, suppress the narrator's character. Moreover, she is also trapped behind current medical science and its views of women's health in the nineteenth century. The combination of the other characters and the science prevents the narrator from doing the things that she wants to do because it is generally believed that it is best for the narrator to rest. Still, she disagrees and says, "I believe that congenial work, with excitement and change, would do me good." The narrator also tries to convince her husband that his treatment is not working. However, he does not listen and instead merely tells her to go to sleep. This clearly demonstrates entrapment, as the narrator is not considered to know what is best, even for her own mental health. In fact, she does not even realize that this is happening and instead wonders aloud, "And what can one do?" and "But what does one do?" These phrases seem to suggest that she does not have any power or authority to do what she believes is in her own best interest."
