"A lot of Japanese as also non-Japanese companies exists for whom JIT did not spell success. Nissan found out during the 1970s that the business practice of Toyota of having suppliers produce or deliver components "just-in-time" to production facilities a number of times during the day, with deliveries managed through the physical exchange of production or parts supply tokens, was not functioning properly in crowded urban areas. As increasingly Japanese factories in various industries embraced the Toyota practice, traffic got worse to an extent in which, during the 1990s, the Japanese government had to launch a media exercise to get the companies to lower the rate of the delivery of their components. The production facilities of Nissan were more scattered compared to Toyota, persuading the organization that it was truly more realistic, any maybe more austere to store a little more inventory on hand compared to what Toyota espoused the system during the initial part of 1950s, along with Toyota, of curtailing avoidable inventories to reduce operational costs and detect errors which may not have been buried or taken a lot of time to find out whether the workers manufactured the components and kept them in stock for weeks and months. In the final analysis, Nissan curtailed the average inventories from a month to a day or somewhat less, but not to the optimal of a few hours which Toyota was able to achieve.
