This paper presents a comprehensive outlook about how epidemiologists can affect the study of disease, its causation and avoidance. The paper contends that even though these issues cannot always be entirely avoided, there are enough things that can be done so that the subject is worthy of discussion. The issue has been examined in the past, but it is important that it is looked at again, because it is clear that there are still unresolved conflicts in many areas and that there are epidemiologists that do not know how to handle them so that they are dealt with quickly and efficiently. Much of this comes from argument based on the different levels of study and which ones should be used for what specific problems. The review of the literature works to clear up some of that confusion by explaining the necessity and merits of each type of study in certain circumstances, as well as where these types of studies do not work well.

"When epidemiologists can find what the general causes of a disease are, what to do to avoid or lessen the risk of it, and how to treat it if it does occur, society benefits very strongly. This is important because diseases and the fear of them throughout society can lead to a loss of productivity and morale, which are bad not only for the people dealing with the disease but for the entire society. Societies that have a high prevalence of disease find that they are often afraid and that they wonder what could be causing the high rate of cancer in the neighborhood, or the abnormally high rates of asthma and breathing problems among their children, for example. Epidemiologists must work to find answers to these and other issues. "
