"East Germany developed into a very different direction under the influence of the Soviet Union than West Germany did under the influence of the US. The ways the occupying powers worked to establish new democratic structures were different for both countries as well. While in Germany all existing institutional structures were completely destroyed, and the country was ruled directly by military administrations for some years after the war, the Supreme Commander Allied Powers (SCAP), the top occupational authority in Japan, ruled indirectly through modified existing institutional structures (Kreft 1994: p. 241). Today, both Japan and reunified Germany are among the world's top economic powers. Both countries are trying to find their place in post-Cold War international politics (Kreft 1994: p. 238)."
