This paper examines how brittle bone disease, or as it it is known to the scientific and medical communities, osteogenesis imperfecta, is a disorder that is both hereditary and spontaneously formed and greatly affects the quality of life of thousands of people all over the United States. There is currently no cure, but treatments are forthcoming. This paper discusses the disease and details the symptoms.

"Due to the lack of sufficient collagen, people afflicted with Brittle Bone Disease have very frail skeletal systems that fracture easily. The severity and frequency of fractures is based on the type of osteogenesis imperfecta that the individual is affected by. There are four types: Type I, Type II, Type III and Type IV. Type I osteogenesis imperfecta (both inherited and due to spontaneous mutations) is the mildest form of the disorder and the most common. It is characterized by susceptibility to breaks (most of which occur before adolescence), relatively normal physique, loose joints and little muscle tone, whites of the eyes have a blue, purple or gray tint, triangular face, tendency toward spinal curvature problems, bone deformities minimal or completely nonexistent, possibility of brittle teeth, chances of hearing loss in early 20s or 30s, collagen is normal but in lesser amounts."
