"Violence, whether one considers it rational or irrational, is a global phenomenon. It manifests itself through the actions of individuals, groups, and on a larger scale, between nations. The pages of human history are filled with warfare, while only few paragraphs speak of times of "peace" or stability. Given this fact, as well as the omnipresence of violence throughout the world today, it is unlikely that this phenomenon can decrease to any significant extent. Many "intellectuals" - by which I mean reasonably intelligent persons who spend significant amounts of time studying and communicating about various subjects on human nature - have written about violence. In order to better understand the nature of violence and its inescapable role in the world, let us turn to their writings."
