"David Mclellan is a Reader in Political Theory at the University of Kent who has written at least four books about Marx, in addition to teaching and lecturing on Marxism through-out the United States. He is not a historian in the sense of being one to extensively study the minute details of a man's personal biography and intimate life. Rather, he studies the history of ideas and ideals that surround historic people and Marx in particular. In so doing, he studied not only all the existent original texts by Marx, but also the very wide body of literature and revolutionary thought that responds to Marx, including both orthodox communist sources, revisionist sources, and others. What is so vital in Mclellan's approach is his way of seeing Marx both as a real, breathing human, and also recognizing that the other thing which he has become: a painted icon, upon whom all sorts of ideas and politics are projected without any relation to reality. In so much as Mclellan had a thesis, it would be that Marx was a complicate, sometimes contradictory thinker whose works and life have become something huge and godlike, and entirely out of sync with his historical self. This work, Mclellan writes, has undergone "transformation into a dogmatic ideology with the correlative concept of heresy -- or revisionism...(The parallels with certain periods of the Christian religion are obvious.) ...if even history did not conform--then history itself had to be rewritten";(79)"
