From the Paper:
"Careers of the twenty first century are unlike of those 20, 30 or 40 years ago. The 1990's economic boom, along with the effects of the knowledge explosion and policy changes in the government, has produced some very new and challenging ways to think about the twenty first century's workforce development The choice of a career is one of the most important steps taken by an individual. A career sets the stage for economic security and personal independence. A career also creates, in many instances, the opportunity for social mobility. A career is the culmination of a specialized learning and the beginning of an individual's climb toward professional proficiency. (Ginsberg, 1971). Therefore, helping individuals make appropriate career choices are one of the most important objectives for educators, psychologists, and career counselors. More specifically career counseling is extremely helpful when the individual is indecisive about academic or career plans; needs assistance in gaining insight into career options; needs to overcome possible obstacles in career upward mobility; or requires professional assistance in a job search. Regardless of the reason the career counselor who offers assistance must not only understand the needs of the client but must have a thorough understanding as to those assessment tools available to help the client make the best career decision possible."
