"Schizophrenia is a brain disorder once thought to have an emotional base but now known to be neurodevelopmental (AACAP, 2001). It rarely develops before the teen years, but the rates of onset rise throughout the teen years. It includes cognitive and social deficits along with psychosis, and is significantly disabling. There is evidence that children who are exposed to trauma in childhood or adolescence are more likely to develop schizophrenia than those who have not had that experience. While it has a strong genetic factor, some environmental factors can affect whether it develops or not (Oliver, 2001). Although autism was once thought to be a form of schizophrenia, it is no longer placed in that diagnostic category (AACAP, 2001)."
