"Ronald M. Hartwell was truly a spokesperson for the optimists of the Industrial Revolution in Britain. Hartwell stressed the overall improvement in the British gross national product per head, and he argued that the Revolution caused more workers to be employed at better paying jobs while the prices of manufactured goods were at the same time falling rapidly.1 Hartwell felt that the standard of living during the Industrial Revolution was not by any means deteriorating, and he backed this up by looking at such evidence as the rising production of food, and the increasing number of people who could afford to deposit money in savings banks. According to Hartwell, the Industrial Revolution provided many factors that would also lead to an increase in productivity in the economy. For example, there was an improvement in technology with the substitution of steam for water power, a transfer of labour from less productive to more productive sectors of the economy, an increase in the specialization of labour, and a general increase in efficiency that came from improved communications and banking.2 Hartwell saw that the replacement of men with machines, of wind and water with steam power, and of the home with the factory marked an increase in productivity that was nothing short of spectacular.3 He also insisted that improvements occurred in British society in the 1840s as a result of the Industrial Revolution, and he fought against the idea that the golden age for workers actually occurred in the eighteenth century. Undoubtably, Hartwell?s writings argued for an upward trend in living standards during the Industrial Revolution and another historian who agreed with this standpoint, to a certain extent, was T.S. Ashton."
