"The author of "Stagg's University" is Robin Lester, a PhD. graduate of the University of Chicago and a teacher in Chicago who has written for many publications, such as the "Journal of American History." As an historian and graduate of the university, he is quite qualified to write about the university and its historic athletic practices. The author brings a personal point-of view to his work, as he personally knows the University of Chicago as a student and as a historical researcher. If the book reflects any particular bias, it is that of someone who disapproves of collegiate sports and their current emphasis in most schools, because he manages to profile Coach Stagg and the University leaders as more concerned with athletic monies than academic excellence. The book won the Best Book Award from the North American Society for Sport History after it was published. The book is a biography of Amos Alonzo Stagg, a famous coach who created a nearly invincible football program at the University of Chicago in the early 20th century."
