This paper explores several themes found in H.G. Well's novel, "The Island of Dr. Moreau." Some of the ideas put detailed by Wells in the book include, what would constitute the ideal human race, and the contrast between an "artificial" and "natural man." The author also looks at when the book was written, and how the Darwinism influenced Well's thoughts when he was writing the book.

"Wells? view that education was as key to the development of an artificial man as physical form was well-illustrated in many of his other writings (Stover 264). Consequently, Moreau echoes his views by stating that ?a pig may be educated? (Wells 75). However, the focus on the animals in The Island of Dr. Moreau is more on their operations than their education, and one might wonder if Moreau is solely interested in the ?plasticity of living forms, to find out the extreme limit of plasticity in a living shape,? without any desire to ameliorate the human race (Wells 77). This may be explained by the fact that Moreau did not find a tabula rasa, and must deal first with the physically implanted thoughts and shapes of the animals before attempting education."
