Paper Summary:
This paper reviews the short story, ?The Yellow Wallpaper? by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, which portrays a woman who, under the care of her husband, a doctor, is taken to a secluded country home for rest where her illness does not improve, but leads to her complete madness. It looks at how in the time that Charlotte Perkins Gilman lived, the early 20th century, she became a crusader for women?s rights, while at the same time coping with depression and a mentally abusive marriage. It analyzes how Gilman, through her book, provides a real insight into the mistreatment of women by men in early 20th-century society.
From the Paper:
"The narrative voice in ?The Yellow Wall-paper? is of a woman writing in a journal that she must hide whenever someone comes near, because her husband believes that writing will tire her out and make her illness worse. To open the story, the narrator starts by describing the house she will be staying in for the next three months while she rests, giving a picture of the exterior and interior of the house, as well as the room in which she will be staying against her wishes. She says, ?I don?t like our room a bit. I wanted one downstairs... but John would not hear of it... So we took the nursery at the top of the house? (1661). She lets the readers know that her writing really does exhaust her, because she always must ?be so sly about it, or else [be met] with heavy opposition? (1660)."
