This paper examines the causes of these two disorders and discusses their similarities. It explains the different symptoms and how one may differ from the other in certain aspects, but states they essentially are caused by the same shock. The writer explains that it is a disorder that can happen following the personal experience or second-hand witnessing of life-threatening events. These events can include military combat, natural disasters such as hurricanes, terrorist incidents, or assaults such as rape. This paper concentrates on the effects of the Oklahoma City bombing on rescue workers and victims.

"It should be noted that PTSS and PTSD go hand in hand. PTSS can be considered the group of signs or symptoms that characterize the illness of PTSD. The syndrome is often characterized by nightmares and flashbacks, sleeping disorders, and depression. As the victims become more mentally involved with these flashbacks, they begin to withdraw, show less emotion, and become disinterested in people and activities. They avoid any situations that might stimulate memories of the traumatic event. Guilt, depression, and sudden outbursts of aggressive behavior may also surface. Drug and alcohol abuse often develop as the individuals attempt to manage these responses. These symptoms often last for years, and have a profound impact on the lives of those who suffer from it, and their families (NCPTSD, 2003)."
