This paper looks at psychoneuroimmunology (PNI), a medical/scientific discipline that studies the relationships between psychological states of the human mind and the response of the immune system to these particular states. It looks at how three specific areas of study are concerned with PNI: research that focuses on the physical interactions between the immune system, the nervous system and the neuroendocrine system; the psychosocial components that influence immunity and its effects on the body; and the influence of immunity on psychological disorders and behavior.

"Conversely, the connection between the immune system and the central nervous system involves five specific products, being cytokins, antibodies, interleukins (a protein with numerous immune system functions), interferons (proteins formed when cells are exposed to viruses), and tumor necrosis factor (a natural body protein with anticancer effects). The overall functions of these products are many and can be described as being regulatory in nature which "stimulates and/or inhibits certain functions and activities of the different cells of the immune system" (Cohen, 1996). In addition, these products can have either a direct or indirect influence on the central nervous system."
