From the Paper:
"Albert Camus' The Plague recounts the saga of a town afflicted with the plague. Camus' novel demonstrates that in a time of crisis, people are often drawn together, as many citizens of Oran were in this unnamed year. Such an epidemic, though, can also polarize the differences and conflicts between people, often aggravating already strained relationships. A tragedy of this magnitude also tends to depersonalize relationships, as if everyone is thinking the same thoughts. Further, Camus' work reveals that heroism is found within oneself, and must be self-motivated. Rieux, a Doctor primarily responsible for diagnosing the town with the plague, who later reveals himself to be the narrator, acts as a hero, putting his life in jeopardy and wholly devoting himself to humanitarian efforts. Rambert, a character who's stay in Oran is transient, applies all his efforts to escaping the scourge, but after contemplation, decides to remain and further becomes a volunteer, risking his life to help alleviate the misery of others. Grand, a simple and somewhat dull person, first ostracized from the others, later assists in altruistic endeavors to help his fellow citizens. Cottard, with whom the reader is acquainted in the context of his attempted suicide, becomes the antithesis of a hero as he profiteers from the misfortune of the town."
