Michael Parenti's "Democracy for the Few" argues that American democratic institutions are democratic only on a surface level. Democracy as such is only functional for a few, elite members of America. The paper discusses the central theme of Parenti's book before critically analyzing several chapters such as "Wealth and Want in the United States" (chapter 2), "The Plutocratic Culture: Institutions and Ideologies" (chapter 3) and "Unequal Before the Law" (chapter 7). "Parenti's book is a fascinating, often disturbing 'take' upon the American political system. He is correct when he states that most analysts assume the system to be fair, and only in need of minor, rather than major repairs. However, Parenti himself is so determined to prove a point that he seems unwilling to concede even the smallest strengths to the system whose undemocratic fabric he is attempting to expose. That he himself has evolved and been educated by the system whose failings seem so evident is testimony, however small, that dissent within the American system is possible to be articulated and sustained, if only in the academia he critiques."
