Paper Summary:
This paper explains that television, radio, print media and internet services will no longer be separate media but will be combined into one. The author points out that in the traditional media, information can generally not be communicated without it being verified; whereas, this does not apply to the internet. The paper relates that the crucial difference between internet media and more traditional media is that the user is in control; therefore, because of issues of free speech, regulation is more difficult.
From the Paper:
"Digital television is another of the major expected technologies of the future. It is important to realize that digital television is not just a new way of sending programs to a general audience, it changes the whole nature of television. Unlike current technology, digital television makes possible an infinite number of channels. Some argue that this will open up television as a medium, allowing more smaller broadcasters to provide content and thus, give people more options in what they view. This seems like one possibility. However, studies on the media industry have suggested that this outcome is not likely. In "Broadcasting, Society and Policy in the Multimedia Age" Graham and Davies argue that digital technology is more likely to create monopolies than to remove them. In making this argument Graham and Davies emphasize that the television industry is not based primarily on providing a public service but on making money. Digital television is likely to increase competition, with this only meaning that the strongest competitors will survive and the weakest will fail."
