Poetry is an art form that can adequately express human feelings that are otherwise difficult to communicate. Prose is yet another way of communicating thoughts. Since the advent of poetry, however, prose is thought of as a secondary, inferior and often a passive vehicle of communication. This paper discusses two works from the two different categories of poetry and prose but by the same author. The paper considers Stevie Smith?s thoughts that comprise a few lines from her book "Novel on Yellow Paper". The thoughts in this piece of prose are compared to the ones in her poem "Away Melancholy". The effectiveness of poem over prose and vice versa is also judged.

"However it appears that the prose has been more effective in conveying the author?s thoughts with more depth and consistency as compared to the poem. In the poem, the author has managed to convey his thoughts but only in a broken fashion. It seems as if the author is jumping from one thought to another, leaving it up to the reader to decide upon the gist of the poem. On the other hand, the prose is adequately linked and it moves from one thought to the next in a logical progression. As a result of this, the reader can understand the gist at one glance."
