This paper evaluates that argument and suggests that it is not as rationally compelling as it first seems. The paper discusses the "Republic" book by book.

"At the beginning of Book II however, the challenge is taken up again by Glaucon and others. It is argued that, in the right context, if the opportunity presents itself, everyone will be unjust. Glaucon illustrates the claim with the case of Gyges, who murdered many people in order to become King, but only after finding a ring that made him invisible, something that ensured that he wouldn?t be caught. This case supposedly illustrates the platitude that injustice leads to happiness, but only when one gets away with it. However, Socrates disagrees. So Glaucon sets him the following challenge: prove it?s better to be just than unjust when the unjust person is rewarded and the just man is punished."
