Teamwork has become a major focus in the business world, with many organizations implementing teams as a means of increasing effectiveness and efficiency. This paper discusses how, despite the many potential benefits of teams, these systems are not always effective. One important reason is that teams are not easy to manage. It shows how conflict is a major problem that occurs in teams and prevents them from being effective. However, while conflict is unavoidable, it is also manageable. This paper examines how organization implementing teams need to consider what conflicts will occur and how they will be managed, and shows that if this is done effectively, teams can achieve their goals of increasing organizational efficiency.

"The first important step of dealing with conflict is to plan ahead to avoid conflict situations. This means not just deciding to implement a team structure, but also ensuring the organization supports this team structure. One important aspect is ensuring the reward system is effective for a team structure. One author notes the importance of this describing how problems occur if the organization introduces teams without changing the appraisal system from an individual system to a group system. As the author says, ?that can send the workforce fatally mixed signals: employees are expected on the one hand to pull together, on the other to compete for individual rewards? (Billsberry 2000, p. 207). Managing this effectively requires that a system that finds the balance between individual and team rewards be found."
