A comparative analysis of the imagery and form used by George Herbert and Henry Vaughan in their exploration of the relationship between the individual and God in religious poetry.

Written in 2002; 2,003 words; 8 sources; APA; $ 63.95

Paper Summary:

This paper analyzes the way in which the thematic of religious poetry affects form and imagery through the argument that the worth of Henry Vaughan's religious poetry is at least equal to that of George Herbert's. Using "The Temple" and "Silex Scintillans" as material, it observes that the simplicity of the verse form and rhyme scheme are essential to the acceptance of a pure and humble relationship with God. It examines how the pseudo-autobiographical narrative form and the use of the imagery of light, heat, the heart and upward motion as part of that narrative are seen as defining the poets' metaphysics in their discussion of religion in life and death. It concludes that Vaughan makes as much of a contribution to metaphysical poetry as Herbert, albeit with different aims that were the result of the context of his own life and devotion to God.

From the Paper:

"The vividly portrayed landscapes in Vaughan's poetry provide the backdrop to the pilgrimage towards God, a journey that is most commonly an upward struggle: in 'Isaac's Marriage' Vaughan advises 'devoutly climb/ Unto thy God,' (v. 44-45). Simultaneously, this is a journey towards death, a subject which Vaughan was certainly very concerned with if not 'anguished' about it. Although death is also a light ('They are all gone to the world of light'), it is simultaneously associated with 'Dull, wretched worms' ('Thou that know'st for whom I mourn (v. 37)). Death is a reminder both of God's forgiveness of human sin but also of man's frailty. In Vaughan's poetry, there is a constant contrast between the 'heap of sand' supported only by 'God's hand' ('Church-service' v. 11) and the stony hardness of the heart, graphically represented on the volume's frontispiece and referred to in much of the poetry."
