A review of Sophocles' ?Oedipus?.

Paper Summary:
This paper discusses how the story of "Oedipus" by Sophocles shows the suffering and pollution which is experienced by the people. The whole kingdom must suffer for the sins of one man which reveals how dynamic the universe in Greek tragedy is. It evaluates how everything is interconnected and vindication must be sought in order for the kingdom to regain its honor. The suffering that first begins as a phenomenon in the kingdom eventually concentrates on the pain and suffering of the royal family. Through a review of literature, it examines and supports the fact that Oedipus was ignorant of the knowledge that led him to ?sin?, but how he gained dignity from his misfortune by sacrificing his comfortable life for one of remorse and repentance.
From the Paper:
"Fate and divine law are explored on throughout the in the play on various levels. The importance of prophecies is highlighted as they unfold. This theme is an extension of the theme of fate and how each character determines their fate by not knowing the truth. Jocasta continues to fervently express her disbelief in prophecies; however, she is the one to realize the ultimate truth of the situation and discourages Oedipus from continuing his venture. Her character also contributes to her eventual downfall. By attempting to divert catastrophe, she has ironically invited it. Also, knowing Oediupus' nature, Jocasta knows that he will not abandon his investigation. Both Jocasta and Oedipus reveal an inability to come to terms with their past and the ability to try and divert the truth. It is these qualities which bring the ruling family of Thebes to ruin. The skepticism they have of the oracles is in fact an avoidance of truth and understanding one's place in the universal order."
