"As a consumer, Amiel reports that due to the public system and managed care, doctors tend to work less hard when their income is capped and they are inundated with paperwork, and hospitals are becoming inefficient. A mention of the return of private medicine brings with it the fear that the poor will suffer from inferior care, and yet the inferior care is present and accounted for in the public system. In another instance, a friend of the author died in the hospital since the hospital staff failed to notify the hematologist needed; again care was denied. The author reports that Canada's best doctors tend to go to America, where private health care is still in existence."
