Examines three articles which refute the pre-twentieth concept that African-American slaves were satisfied with their lot and had no cause for complaint.

Written in 2002; 1,321 words; 3 sources; MLA; $ 44.95

Paper Summary:

One mission of twentieth-century slave history appears to have been to refute the popular concept, upheld in Southern society before and after the Civil War, that slaves were "happy" in or otherwise suited to their status. The historiographical strategy has been to look at evidence of the slave period and previous interpretations of it with a view toward correcting the record. This paper examines three articles which refute the pre-twentieth century misconceptions: Robert William Fogel and Stanley L. Engerman, "The Quality of Slave Labor and Racism" (1974); Eugene Genovese. "The Black Work Ethic" (1974) and Kenneth M. Stampp "A Troublesome Property" (1956).

From the Paper:

"Genovese cites the disappearance of social cohesion implicit in collective effort to help explain the disarray, hopelessness, and "chronic lack of political unity" (333) of black society in the post-Emancipation context of dominant industrial capitalism, individualism, and the Protestant work ethic. The notion (by no means immutable fact) of the "black brotherhood" that survives in the modern period is, according to Genovese, residue of the community sense that drove attitudes toward work in the slave era, that indeed made very life experience bearable at the time."
