An analysis of moral responsibility regarding unjust laws, including referrals to the works and ideas of Martin Luther King Jr., Henry David Thoreau and Plato.

Written in 2002; 1,100 words; 3 sources; MLA; $ 38.95

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses various definitions of what makes a law just or unjust, according to the beliefs of King, Thoreau and Plato. The issue of racial segregation is briefly explored in the paper and these philosophers ideas are presented. The case of the United States Congress passing a constitutional amendment prohibiting all abortions is examined. King's, Thoreau's and Plato's opinions and views on this issue are explained in turn.

From the Paper:

"Consequently, King's argument suggests that anti-abortion laws should be violated because a person has a moral responsibility to oppose laws they consider unjust. However, King's own reliance on questions of basic human rights raises the question of his own stance on the fetus as a human being and the morality of its destruction. Thoreau would seem clearly to support the idea that a person must oppose abortion laws if they consider them unjust. And Plato would disagree with Thoreau and King on the grounds that a person who chooses to live under the dictates of a government must choose to obey those dictates."
