A look into debate strategy through Plato's "Apology".

Written in 2002; 972 words; 1 source; MLA; $ 34.95

Paper Summary:

The fact that such an eloquent speaker and orator such as Socrates could not argue his way out of a charge brought against him by the State is a cause for closer examination. This paper attempts to show how Socrates purposefully lost his case in order to obtain martyrdom. It looks at the writings of Plato and how in his work "Apology", he explains the methods used by Socrates to achieve his goals.

From the Paper:

"Socrates is widely regarded as one of the greatest philosophers of all time. His ideas and methods of scientific thought and reasoning, revolutionary in his age, are the commonplace standards of today. Socrates approached and theorized about some of life's great mysteries without reliance on the powers of the gods, contrary to the approach of many other Greek philosophers. It seems ironic then that such an intelligent man with such a vast sphere of influence was prosecuted and eventually sentenced to death for his unorthodox views. One would think that, given Socrates intelligence and unparalleled ability as a public speaker, composing a solid case in his defense would be a stone's throw from easy. In order to discover why such a brilliant man lost a seemingly winnable case, a closer study of Plato's Apology is necessary. Upon examining the text, it becomes hard to overlook the fact that Socrates attitude toward the jurors and the state is sarcastic and at times indignant. One might ask why Socrates used such an aggressive and caustic defense when his life was literally at stake. Socrates' adoption of this unusual and seemingly damaging strategy was made in a tremendous effort to loose the trial on purpose while remaining steadfast in his beliefs. Socrates believed that the influence of his ideas and theories would have a greater effect as a product of a martyr who died fighting for what he believed in than as a product of a forgotten philosopher that left not with a bang but a whimper."
