Paper Summary:
This paper makes the argument that although most people think of Laura as the main character in "The Glass Menagerie", Tom has prevailing importance because he is the narrator and because the play ends with his liberation. The other characters are seen as pawns used to illustrate his suffering and eventual liberation. Specific examples are given in quotation format from the play, to illustrate each point.
From the Paper:
"Firstly, Tom is certainly a very round character, or one who the reader knows a lot about -- enough to seem like a whole person, or well-rounded. Much basic information is revealed about Tom, including his age, job status, living arrangements, nickname, and his hobbies and habits. More important, perhaps, is when the intimate details of Tom's life are exposed. For instance, when Jim O'Connor visits Tom and his family for supper, Tom says to him, "I know I seem dreamy, but inside -- well, I'm boiling! Whenever I pick up a shoe, I shudder a little thinking how short life is and what I am doing!" (62). Up to this point, it has been revealed already how much money Tom makes and where he works, but now he is showing how he feels about it, thus adding depth and creating the sense of wholeness of his character."
