"One of the principal effects of the booming United States economy in the decades immediately following World War II was the establishment of the belief among most Americans that the increase in prosperity and the growth of social justice could continue indefinitely. When it was discovered, following the recession of 1973, that the future was not so much under control as people had believed, Americans began to grow dissatisfied with their lot and underestimated the standard of living and, some argue, the level of social justice that already prevailed in the United States. Despite the economic good times of the 1990s Americans have continued to complain and to worry about the future.
