This paper examines the importance of learning about our history. The paper discusses the learning program "Nearby History", and illustrates it as a wonderful tool to help children grasp the relevancy of history by studying the lives of people and institutions that have existed in the same location as the student, albeit in the past. The paper explains that by realizing that we have a connection with those from the past we become more sensitive to appreciate the connection we have with people who are distanced from us not by time, but by distance, and perhaps even by status and class.

"Empathy is the capacity to understand an issue or principle from another's point of view. For children, especially today, that is not always an easy task. With so much information out in the world today and the newspapers expressing so many problems, it's easy to become overloaded and hence shut down to all but those things that seem to effect one directly. "Nearby History" is a wonderful tool to help children grasp the relevancy of history -- and along with it the relevancy of others separated by barriers other than time -- by studying the lives of people and institutions that have existed in a the same location as the student, albeit in the past. By visiting buildings common to both the past and the present, by visiting cemeteries where those who have made the history we study, now reside, we create powerful touch points that allow students to develop a concrete connection with the past."
