"The Mexican Revolution can be said to consist of two major epochs. First is the era from the overthrow of Porfirio Diaz in 1910 to the time of the promulgation of the Mexican constitution in 1917, the era of violent struggle and civil war. Second is the era from 1917 until 1940, the epoch of peaceful but rapid and radical social change. Both divisions are somewhat arbitrary, but most historians seem to agree on this dating as the most plausible and possible demarcation. What is more difficult to define is the exact purpose of the revolution and its goals. The violent era of the revolution was largely non-ideological, spontaneous, and run not so much by ideologues as by people who had simply become fed up with the Diaz government. The non-violent era has likewise been non-ideological, seeking mostly to reform the society along the most expedient lines without falling ... "
