Fisher (1998) stated that two important factors-internal and external stimuli-"influence the interpretations that guide communications" (pp. 237-238). With respect to interpersonal communication, Fisher (1998) noted that (1) human attention is selective and that individuals seek "congruence between ... internal state, behavior, and interpretations" through "selectively perceiving" (p. 239). Further, Fisher (1998) stated that a person "may maintain internal-external congruence by distorting or avoiding data" (p. 239).
