At the same time, both authors are thorough in exposing the human tendency to judge, to be hypocritical, self-centered, and prejudiced. Gilman focuses on gender differences to show what is valuable in human life and what is detrimental to humanity, while Cather focuses on religious aspects of existence and how religion can enhance an individual's humanity my calling him or her to live up the highest ideals of love and friendship.
