"Cognitive theory studies how people understand the world around them and how this cognition aids their efforts for successful adaptation to the surrounding environment. A prevailing assumption is that cognition affects behavior. Certain theories hold that this progression is also influenced by motivations. Motivation is viewed as a "moving force which instigates behavior and is primarily a function of thought rather than needs, drives, or arousal" (Reeve, 1997, 160).
