Paper Summary:
This paper explains that, in George Ritzer's "The Globalization of Nothing 2", glocalization is defined as the interacting of global and local cultures resulting in unique outcomes in different geographic areas. The author points out that Ritzer defines grobalization as the domination of nations, corporations and organization by imposing themselves on various geographic regions. The paper continues that Ritzer's definition of nothing is as a social form, which is generally centrally conceived, controlled and comparatively devoid of distinctive substantive content. The author concludes that Ritzer believes that corporations, wealthy nations and organizations are the main contributors to nothing because their products, politics and ideas are lacking in this distinctive substantive content, hence are nothing. The author states that this book needs better organization and that Ritzer words seem to contradict themselves.
From the Paper:
"Something" can be described as unique, having local geographic ties, being specific to the times, humanized, and enchanted. "Nothing" on the other hand can be described as generic, having lack of local ties, being non-specific to the times, dehumanized, and disenchanted. Examples of "something" in reality would include a community bank, personal loan, personal banker, and individualized assistance. Examples of "nothing" in reality would include a credit card company, credit card loan, telemarketer, and automated/dial-up aid. While "nothing" is becoming a dominating way of like throughout the world and has become globalized; Ritzer stresses that "something" has always existed and will continue to exist throughout human history.
