Moral development is a process which earnestly begins at birth, when the nascent mind begins immediately to observe the behaviors of those around it, passively integrating this information into a fledgling understanding of the world. This paper discusses how Emile Durkheim's moral education helps us toward an understanding of this process more fully, paying specific attention, in a theoretical framework referred to as the moral education theory, to the impact and intent of public school as a mode to incorporating both the rational and individual elements of morality which are crucial to individual development.

"Durkheim characterizes the balance which is necessary in forging moral development in the young learner by recognizing the equal demands for a primary and formal delivery of information and for an experiential acquisition of knowledge. It is the determination of his text that the proper capacity to consider the possibilities before one's self and to exact moral decisions on that basis will be derived from a clear initiation into the mores and limitations of society and from a distinctly earned sense of self. It is here that we can begin to see the manner in which individuality and a recognition of being part of some greater system of interactive behaviors will together amount to the dual elements of one's moral development. "
