Paper Summary:
This paper examines the holy rites of the Catholic Church that are today vital to the modern Catholic sense of unity, community and continuity. In this research, the author reveals that the process of Catholic evolution has not produced a significant degree of change in the beliefs and practices concerning the three major rites of passage discussed here. However, as demonstrated by the relative uniformity of certain aspects of these rites, such as the modern association between age and rite or the persistence of such declared themes as congregational and global Christian unity, it is evident that the evolution of Catholicism has specifically been concerned with the elevation of community interests in the perpetuation of ritual traditions.
From the Paper:
"This would be true with the holy purification of the baptism, which traces its origins to the Jewish tradition of ritual bath immersion for purification. (Serra, 70) The New Testment shows a reassessment of this process as a mode to both purification and to ascendance to the community and the Christian brotherhood. Once performed by John the Baptist in the River Jordan for those seeking ablution in the face of imminent death, "in the Church of the first three centuries adult Baptism was the norm" (DeGidio, 1) However, in the ensuing time, an interesting change in the baptism concerns its association with the beginning of the life-cycle. Indeed, baptism does in its very principle concern the notion of birth, or of rebirth, within the Christian light. Thus, that it has become the first of initiation steps in the spiritual life of a Catholic, with newborn Catholics expected to undergo this rite of passage as a means to entering life in a covenant with God. This change is indicative of the standardization of Baptism in Catholicism.
"It has been seen by some that immersion is a necessary way of commemorating the life, death and rebirth of Jesus. According to the selected passage, "that which happened to Christ in his death and resurrection is transferred to the believer in baptism: "Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?' (Romans 6:3)" (Thomas, 1) This means that today, it is believed that those who undergo ceremonial baptism have assumed a sense of responsibility for the death and burial of Jesus, just as they have shared in the experience of his resurrection. This notion of a shared experience is crucial here and, increasingly, throughout other Catholic sacraments. The shared experience is the evolving aspect of community in Catholic life, with immersion symbolizing an immersion into the shared element of Christianity.
Just as the first baptism is considered a rite of passage relating in a triangulating fashion to God and Community, so too is the next crucial milestone in the Catholic life cycle. Today, as the Baptism is so often performed to induce one's into the community who haven't the capacity to fully comprehend or consent, the Confirmation appears as a subsequent rite for the individual Christians entering adulthood. In modern discourse, it is commonly referred to as something of an initiation of individuals into Christian adulthood."
