This paper takes a look the economic evolution of Canada marked by the gradual end of the feudal system towards the end of the 18th century. The paper points out that the leading factor in this change was the revolution in the US, happening at the same time. Breaking loose from the colonial authority of Britain, the US emerged not just as a powerful entity on its own right, but introduced large-scale capitalism to the hemisphere. Where feudalism had once subjected its inhabitants to a hierarchy of land-ownership and peasant tributary to the possessing aristocracy, capitalism was pairing with an age of homesteading. The British failure to retain authority in the US also signaled a change in the world's approach to subjugating foreign lands. This was particularly true as the profitability of capitalism began to point to a new reality in these predominantly agricultural commercial lands. It was thus that the French and British colonialists began to adopt a moderated approach to address the economic proliferation of Canadian territory's agricultural potential. The paper concludes that this relatively egalitarian system helped to provoke the sense of independence that would gradually become a reality for Canadians.

"However, two factors changed the face of Canadian settlement, forcing a transition into a system less based upon feudalism than based upon economic growth. First, Canada became a destination for former Loyalists to the British Crown whom, upon America's successful battle for independence, sought refuge from the new nation in the north. Second, the demand for development of its lands, either as yet unrealized or still inhabited by Native American tribes, had become an imperative for the expansion of the Canadian territory as a meaningful colonial territory. The offshoot of these realities was that the controlling French powers in Quebec were left with the need to habituate the agriculturally bountiful lands still awaiting attention and with the need to integrate a new population of soldiers, families and statesmen into their economy."
