Paper Summary:
In this article, the writer notes that World War II remains as one of the greatest nightmares of the twentieth century. Perhaps the most chilling aspect of this disastrous event was the apathy of millions to the plight of the persecuted. The writer points out that at the Geneva Convention it was vowed that never again would genocide like Hitler's be allowed to go unwatched. Yet the nightmare in Rwanda passed without notice by the world. This paper written in a personal manner, maintains that if technology is to manufacture a tragedy, the guilt may lie once again on those attempting to rid themselves of responsibility. The writer concludes that God has demonstrated to us the responsibilities inherent in the act of creation. The writer maintains that this presents a daunting task and should not be performed without careful thought and consideration.
From the Paper:
"A deadlock exists between two dynamically opposed readings of the future. Some see the development of artificial life to be the fatal step of mankind. They view the creation of conscious life as marking the end of humanity, and stand immobilized as they await the fulfillment of their fearsome fantasies. Others see the salvation of our world in the creation of benevolent all-powerful robots. Both realities misrepresent humanity's duties to the things it brings into existence. If the creation of conscious life is possible it is our duty to teach and guide it without expecting salvation in return. The consequences of bringing about such a creation are upon the designer. Before humanity endeavors on the creation of a conscious being, men and women of science must be willing to take responsibility for their actions."
