It focuses on the views of Mary Walter's in her book, "Encountering American Race Relations." "It seemed apparent even to many of us who witnessed this in our youths that the treatment to which the black children were subjected in a predominantly white school was a product of voluntary but unconscious racism. The white establishment's function through this school served to enforce such destructive elements of the black identity as a propensity toward poor academic performance and socially unacceptable behavior. Though it can be deduced that there were provocations inbuilt to the school's approach and structure which inclined the black students in my class to show resistance, there is yet little broad-based social redress for the disadvantage thus heaped upon such students. As is elucidated in Waters' text, this is one of the many ways in which race is used to promote social and economic distinctions amongst ethnic groups."
