Paper Summary:
This paper addresses the question of whether human communication, formulated upon the characteristics determined by the physiological makeup of the human being combined with his interpersonal social interactions, is indeed superior to that of animals. To refute this idea, the paper focuses on communication among two particular species, the whale and the chimpanzee. The paper maintains that these two species serve as suitable examples of a refinement and a formality of structure within linguistic transmission that is informative, emotive and sophisticated. After an examination of the language-communication proclivities between members of both species, the paper concludes that such an aptitude cannot be considered a singular quality denoting human superiority.
From the Paper:
"Some of the most recent developments in the study of marine mammal communication indicate that, even further, the whale song mirrors the structural sophistication of human speech. The inherent demands of employing sound to communicate ideas have given human beings over to a formality of structure that establishes a logical sequence of word, phrase, idea and conversation. The same is true, researchers revealed only this month, of the humpback whale, which was examined as a test case. At the base of this commonality, "both humans and whales communicate by using discrete sound units that are arranged within a hierarchical structure." (Viegas, 1) Where human language must be arranged into units, from individual words to sentences, and from sentences to paragraphs, so too are whale songs divided into distinct units of conversation. According to recent findings, "in terms of humpback songs, a song session consists of songs; a song consists of themes; a theme consists of phrases; a phrase consists of units."" (Viegas, 1) This is a remarkable revelation that, more than undermining the assumption of human communication as an indicator of unique superiority, even goes so far as to call to scrutiny the idea that human communication is itself an unparalleled ability."
