Paper Summary:
This paper explains that, during the incubational age of anthropological curricular development, photographed records were used as a means to preserve ancient histories; however, today, some anthropologists offer a persuasive case against the utilization of photographed records as a support for anthropological conclusions. The author points out that culture and purpose are mutable factors, which may cause the meaning of a photograph to change over time, even as the photograph itself remains essentially the same. The paper states that, in some instances, photography can be a downright misleading approach to preserving recorded evidence of the lifestyle, subsistence and culture of a people. The author relates that the context in which the subjects were often placed were idealizations of western culture, with traditional garb and surroundings supplanting the reality of people virtually eliminated by forced conversion, genocide and displacement.
From the Paper:
"Edwards provides photographed records which help to illustrate the subversion of reality of which many early anthropologists were guilty. In the 1890 piece, "Iban Woman Weaving," for an example, we find a subject that is adorned in formal clothing that seems unlikely to have been utilized during such labor. The woman is posed in an unrealistic manner, suggesting she is not genuinely engaged but highly conscious that she is being recorded. These factors imply that any ethnography intended will have failed due to the unnatural conditions initiated by the study itself. Social patterns and organization can hardly be properly observed through photographs the pursuit of which was directly disruptive thereto."
