This paper examines affirmative action in America today. It explains the history of the implementation of affirmative action in all aspects of American life. The writer further discusses how with the proper implementation, affirmative action can be an extremely effective channel to providing access to education and employment for America's racially disadvantaged. The writer points out that under poor leadership, however, affirmative action can have the impact of damaging the cause for equality and draw the criticism of political groups on both sides of the racial spectrum. In conclusion, the writer notes that it is clear that future efforts will focus on honing the application of affirmative action toward improving standards of living for minorities while aligning with the overall ethos of the U.S. Constitution and the American identity.

"Education is justifiably regarded by politicians, activists and policy-makers as the access point to employment, social mobility and economic independence. Due to the firmly entrenched history of racial imbalance which has forged the United States of present day, education and its associated prospects have long been made available to white men with a degree of exclusivity that has severely handicapped the opportunities available to demographics such as African and Hispanic Americans. Indeed, categorized under the umbrella misnomer 'minority,' these groups are not simply detained in their access to quality education, but often are steeped in cultural and economic conditions which do not encourage the pursuit of education at all."
