Women of "The Sparrow", 2004.
An analysis of the two main female characters in Mary Doria Russell's sci-fi novel, "The Sparrow".

Abstract
This paper shows that, although the author of "The Sparrow", Mary Doria Russel, has created believable and appealing female characters, she falls short of making them truly valuable and indeed goes so far as to make them all too human, which may be her novel's primary shortcoming.

From the Paper
"In spite of these considerable skills and positive impact on the crew as a whole, the two women of the crew do not loom as large in the story as do the men. Russell seems to have decided, in an acknowledgment of her predominantly male audience perhaps, that it is the men who make the major contributions and the women who falter. In a key scene, as D.W. closes in on death, he tells Anne that he has chosen Jimmy to succeed him as leader of the Rakhat crew. D.W. first lists the reasons why the other men are not fit for the role, then, almost as an after thought says "Annie, you feel too much and Sofia thinks too damn quick for her own good. Jim's got a fine balance in him.""

Comparison of 'To a Skylark' and 'Sparrow', 2002.
A stylistic comparison of the poem 'To a Sklark' by Percy Bysshe Shelley and the modern poem 'Sparrow' by Thom Gunn.

Abstract
This paper compares these two poems which are similar in message but very different in style. It includes a discussion of how the techniques of expression in lyric poetry may change in detail but have much in common. The writer compares both poems, with bird imagrey as the central theme.

From the Paper
"The first poem I am going to discuss is To A Skylark by Shelley, the poem consists of twenty-one five-line stanzas, all of which have an ABABB rhyming scheme, which gives strong rhythmic pattern to the poem. The poem is addressed to the Skylark itself, a bird that is associated with its melodious song and is known to fly very high when it is disturbed. When we read on in the poem we soon realise that the Skylark is not an actual bird, but an image of escapism.
The poem starts with the lines,
?Hail to thee, blithe spirit!
Bird thou never wert?
Here Shelley denies the bird?s physical, material being and addresses it spiritually, this could be seen as Shelley?s desire to escape from the material world. The last line of each stanza is always much longer than the ones before it, in this stanza the last lines read,
?Pourest thy full heart
In profuse strains of unpremeditated art.? "

Abstract
This paper reviews two science fiction novels, the 'Necromancer' by William Gibson and 'Sparrow' by Mary Doria Russell. According to the paper, both novels underline the importance of the physical state of individual bodies in shaping society. The paper further discusses how in both books, the central thesis is that modern humanity denies the effects of the body, upon the mind and society, at its peril.

From the Paper
"In Mary Doria Russell's Sparrow, the novel depicts an alien, primitive world that is interfered with by outside forces. Once the delicate balance between two warring tribes on another planet is upset by outside influence, chaos breaks loose. Also, the novel's main character is initially subject to another kind of physical alteration, because he is priest. The novel is concerned not simply with how the individual natural body is impinged upon by technology and changed, but also by how the interference of celibacy affects the mind and body--by withholding the body's natural functions through attempted improvement, more harm may be done. It shows how a community of priests is created on earth characterized by physical noninvolvement, and also how the priest's involvement in the environment of another world changes that world."

Abstract
This paper examines a study that observed the interaction between the plants and birds of the tidal mudflat and determine what the different organisms provided for each other in the environment. The paper describes the observation of species inhabiting the Bolsa Chica Ecological Preserve, located near Huntingdon Beach, California. The four species observed during this study were Belding's Savannah sparrow, California Cord grass, the Brown Pelican and Pickle weed.

From the Paper
"The intertidal salt marsh lies between the shore and the open bay water. Because of the proximity to the open ocean, it is often windy. It contains mud flats where the soil has high salt content that can only support grasses of varying heights. The salt marsh is home to a wide variety of birds, some that are year-round residents and others that use the marsh as a resting-place during their winter migrations to the South."
